When a cavity in a tooth proceeds from the enamel, past the dentin and into the pulp (nerve and blood supply of the tooth) a filling is no longer sufficient to repair the tooth.
A specialized procedure known as a “root canal” is required to remove the pulpal tissue, disinfect the tooth and then seal it with a specialized rubber compound.
The tooth is no longer “vital” but can still be used for chewing, space maintenance and speaking.
We do not offer this service at Thessalon Dental but will refer you to specialists in Sault Ste. Marie or Sudbury.
The only alternative to root canal therapy is extraction of the tooth. After appropriate healing, an extracted tooth can be replaced by a dental implant, a fixed bridge or a removable denture.
